Basement Brickwork

Many period houses have a cellar or additional rooms below or partly below ground level. This section covers the construction of basement walls.


Basements were built with the footings beneath, but the walls are typically 1.5 bricks wide, with a backfill of loose stone, coarse gravel, and sand, with a drain laid at the bottom:
