The main components of a staircase are:
newel - one of the main posts supporting the handrail
string or stringer - one of the parallel boards supporting the treads
handrail - the horizontal or sloping rail supported by the newels and balusters
baluster - one of the minor posts supporting the handrail
balustrade - a set of balusters
tread - the horizontal part of a step
riser - the vertical part of a step
nosing - leading edge of a tread
