Stairs

The main components of a staircase are:

  • newel - one of the main posts supporting the handrail
  • string or stringer - one of the parallel boards supporting the treads
  • handrail - the horizontal or sloping rail supported by the newels and balusters
  • baluster - one of the minor posts supporting the handrail
  • balustrade - a set of balusters
  • tread - the horizontal part of a step
  • riser - the vertical part of a step
  • nosing - leading edge of a tread
  • landing - an enlarged tread at a bend in the staircase
  • winder - a tapered step which turns the staircase
