Stairs
The main components of a staircase are:
- newel - one of the main posts supporting the handrail
- string or stringer - one of the parallel boards supporting the treads
- handrail - the horizontal or sloping rail supported by the newels
and balusters
- baluster - one of the minor posts supporting the handrail
- balustrade - a set of balusters
- tread - the horizontal part of a step
- riser - the vertical part of a step
- nosing - leading edge of a tread
- landing - an enlarged tread at a bend in the staircase
- winder - a tapered step which turns the staircase
