New roof or first aid?

A graduated slate roof of considerable size with a large - maybe 12'x8' flat lead area in the middle. Four reputable firms of architects had a look at it. Their views ranged from:

1. Don't let anybody tell you you need a new roof. A few slates need strapping and a good plumber will sort out the lead.

2. and 3. I'd get a few quotes for first aid, full repair and complete re-roof and then decide.

4. You desperately need a new roof. The lead is old and needs replacing, the slates are slipping.

How can one make a decision made on that!?
