Time was when ......... all clocks were made like these

We are a family firm specialising in making clocks of 'antique' character, using traditional materials and the heritage skills of England. Our clocks and barometers bring together our own Master Cabinetmaking with the traditional metalworking skills of Sheffield.

A Very Special Timepiece

Your Laverton clock, whether it be a Grandfather clock, Bracket clock or Wall clock, more than any other piece of furniture, will become part of your home, almost living, ticking away the minutes and striking the hours - giving an atmosphere and presence that no other piece of furniture could possibly do.

Clocks are remembered with affection and in the case of Grandfather clocks often referred to by name within your family. Indeed each one of our Grandfather clocks starts off life with its own name, so we know who has gone where. As we are a small family firm, your clock will be one of a few rather than one of many.

The Clocks

Our range of clocks includes:

  • Grandfather or Longcase clocks
  • Wall and Regulator clocks
  • Bracket or Mantel clocks

Our clocks use the best movements from Germany. We also make Banjo barometers using English instruments.

The Longcase or Grandfather clock is the classic English clock and is generally considered the finest achievement of English clockmaking.

Our Woods & Finishes

Cabinetmakers at the end of the 17th century used English Oak and by 1740 were using Brazilian Mahogany. We use both of these magnificent woods in our Grandfather, Bracket, and Wall clocks. The solid wood gives a truly beautiful mellow sound to the chimes. The cases are antiqued, and then traditionally finished by French polishing. We also offer Ebonised clocks, and hand-painted clocks using specially prepared paints and patinas from Provence in southern France.

The Clock Dials

For our Grandfather, Bracket, and Wall clocks, we make our own white and brass dials. Each of our solid brass dials has a hand-engraved centre and has engraved or cast brass corner spandrels. Our deep-etched brass chapter rings are grained and silver plated.

Our engraved designs are traditional. Some are based on an original Grandfather clock of 1770 and our London range of Bracket clocks are based on a classic Charles II clock circa 1775. For the London range we also make our own carrying handles as well as the spandrels, chapter rings, and engraved dial plates.

Hand engraving is a special skill synonymous with the metal-working heritage of Sheffield, and a decoration that can be found on clocks from the eighteenth century. In essence, hand engraving is the art of removing metal by cutting with a small chisel held in one's hand. The special quality of hand engraving differs from machine engraving in that each one is unique and the grooves cut are calligraphic and not symmetrical.

In today's automated world, it is a unique feature of our dials and probably not seen on any other clocks made today.

Customised for You

You have the opportunity to tailor your clock to your wishes. Choose different woods; Brazilian Mahogany, English Oak or a painted finish. Select the style of dials and its finish. In the longcase clock, you can have antiqued weight shells and chains, or have the brass left polished. Choose different engravings or paintings, or have an engraved plaque to remind you of that special occasion.
