Gothic Flooring

Plain or decorative encaustic tiles were popular around Gothic fireplaces, in halls, kitchens, bathrooms, porches and toilets, and even on garden paths. Designs were elaborate and colours strong.

Other floors used wooden floorboards. These then featured a central carpet or else rugs.

Wealthier homes used parquet flooring.

Staircases were of wood, often left uncarpeted, or else with a central runner.

The kitchen floorboards were oiled or varnished. Some kitchen floors were tiled.
