Window Fittings

This is a guide to typical window fittings in the Victorian and Edwardian period house.

Sash Window Fittings

The typical fittings on sash windows are:

catch

later Victorian and Edwardian catches were usually in brass and spring loaded

lift

a reinforced socket so that a boathook on a pole can be used to open and close the window

sash pulley

the ropes pass over a brass or iron pulley

The earliest sash windows did not have ropes and pulleys and were instead propped open with a stick.
