Roof Designs
Most period houses in the Victorian and Edwardian eras were roofed
with Welsh slate; sometimes a porch was roofed with terracotta
tiles. Arts and Crafts houses
would have been roofed entirely in tiles.
Three roof 'patterns' are common:
- Slate - with slate tiles, and clay tile or lead ridges
- Clay - with clay tiles and clay tile ridges
- Metal Sheet - with lead or zinc or copper
Roofs can be:
- flat - typically surfaced with lead or zinc
- single pitch
- gable
- Dutch gable
- hipped
- mansard
- turreted
